Our house was only the fourth to be built in the street. We watched the neighbourhood grow, and as children we played a lot on the - then vacant - land. The neighbourhood evolved into a desirable place for families, especially when a preschool was founded in the street in 1957. Later, we went on foot to St Joseph primary school or by public transport or bicycle to Merksem, or were at the secondary school in Antwerp in half an hour by bus. Meanwhile, grandchildren came for our parents, and the nice thing was that our children went to school here in the street. That meant they could go to grandma and grandpa's for lunch twice a week. Even after school, they could go and play in the big garden. A bliss!
